Stock Operator,

It's more like the herd mentaility. Big boys start selling, thus causing margin calls, then others panic and sell and it becomes a huge snowball effect. They love to teach daytraders a lesson every now and then. If you don't think this market is manipulated, start tracking some stocks and how they move up with no cause and head down as quickly.
