Optical switches are great, but not that big a deal. A lot of people are getting them confused with optical routers, which may be impossible to invent.

The 8/99 issue of SmartMoney had a feature article titled "The next big thing" that spoke about technologies they saw as having great potential and the companies behind them. Most of the companies they mentioned (JDSU, RFMD, BVSN, etc.) have done well since. One topic they discussed was MEMS. They identified a few companies working with that technology (TI, ADI and Microcosm). That last one is a private company, but they suggested their web site as a way to keep abreast of MEMS developments
