I think the point is that ALL of the software vendors were doing those deals, and EVERYONE wanted the details kept secret

The OEMs only distributed Microsoft software, for the most part, until after the consent decree, in 1995. And even today, many OEMs are distributing Microsoft Works and Money. So if new users upgrade, they're probably going to upgrade to MS Office, because it is similar to Works. And, of course, Money is the other market Microsoft wants to dominate. Thankfully, many vendors distribute Quicken, also. But the mere fact that Microsoft wanted to buy Intuit shows that Microsoft wants to monopolize any aspect of software that it deems important.
