Copper Mountain Introduces DSL Integrated Access Device for Concurrent Voice
and Data Services
PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 5, 2000--
New Customer Premise IAD Enables Converged Broadband Services over
DSL; Product Compatible with Multiple Voice Platforms
Copper Mountain Networks, Inc., (Nasdaq:CMTN), the market-share
leader in business Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) equipment, today
introduced the CopperRocket(R) 408 Symmetric DSL (SDSL) Integrated
Access Device (IAD) for converged voice and data services.
The CopperRocket 408 SDSL IAD delivers multiple simultaneous
services -- eight voice lines plus high-speed data over a single-pair,
conventional copper telephone line via DSL -- offering businesses,
remote offices, and teleworkers a cost-effective alternative for
toll-quality, multi-line voice and high-speed broadband services.
At the central office (CO), the new product interoperates with
leading voice equipment, including the Lucent PathStar(TM), an
IP-based, multi-service CO access server, and the TollBridge TB200(TM)
carrier-grade, IP-based Local Exchange Gateway.
The CopperRocket 408 SDSL IAD is an integrated data and voice over
DSL (VoDSL) product that supports the PathStar Access Server from
Lucent Technologies.
PathStar combines the features and functions of a Voice Gateway
and a traditional Class 5 telephony switch, allowing new service
providers such as Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs),
Internet Service Providers (ISPs), as well as established carriers to
offer low-cost, innovative voice and data services.
The CopperRocket 408 SDSL IAD communicates with PathStar via Media
Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP) signaling, which seamlessly bridges
circuit-based Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTNs) and
packet-based data networks.
In addition, the CopperRocket 408 SDSL IAD supports IP-based
GR-303 Voice Gateways such as the TB200 Local Exchange Gateway from
TollBridge Technologies.
These gateways communicate with legacy Class 5 telephony switches
and allow carriers to provide, and end users to enjoy, the same voice
services they have today -- including Plain Old Telephone Service
(POTS), Centrex, direct inward dialing, direct outward dialing, voice
mail, E-911 and 411, call waiting, speed dialing, and other popular
CLASS features.

CopperVIP Program Encourages Interoperability
By participating in Copper Mountain's CopperVIP(TM)--or Voice In
Packets -- Initiative, customer premise equipment (CPE) vendors can
leverage the CopperRocket 408 SDSL IAD and the underlying technology
to speed the development of additional IADs.
CopperVIP, an extension of Copper Mountain's industry-leading
CopperCompatible(TM) program, facilitates and accelerates the
development of products that are interoperable with Copper Mountain
DSL concentrators.
The CopperVIP program also facilitates inter-operability of CPE,
IADs, and Integrated Communications Platforms (ICPs) with solutions
from Copper Mountain partners, including CopperCom, Jetstream
Communications, Lucent Technologies, and TollBridge Technologies.

VoDSL Market Growing Rapidly
The market for VoDSL services is expected to emerge market over
the next few years. Allied Business Intelligence estimated that in
1999, the market opportunity for VoDSL IADs was less than $1 million.
This figure is expected to grow to more than $1.7 billion by 2004,
representing a compound annual growth rate(CAGR) of 331 percent.

strategic alliance with Copper Mountain, will distribute the
CopperRocket 408 IAD under the 3Com(R) brand.

About the CopperRocket 408 SDSL IAD
The CopperRocket 408 SDSL IAD offers toll-quality voice and data
services over DSL at selectable speeds from 128 kbps to 1.568 Mbps.
The IAD connects readily to existing data and voice equipment at the
customer premise, including analog phone, fax, and key systems, and it
provides lifeline phone services, even during loss of power.
Adaptive jitter buffering and echo cancellation contribute to
clear, toll-quality voice.
The new product digitizes, packetizes, and optionally compresses
the end user's voice and data signals, then combines the traffic for
transport over DSL, prioritizing voice to ensure end-to-end quality of
service (QoS). The IAD supports up to eight voice connections; when
on-demand voice ports are idle, it dynamically allocates bandwidth for
data services.
With no hardware switches, no configuration parameters, and no
end-user software, the CopperRocket 408 SDSL IAD conforms to the
Copper Mountain Zero Installation Procedure (ZIP(TM)) for subscriber
equipment. As with all of Copper Mountain plug-and-play CPE, users
simply plug in the DSL line, telephone lines, Ethernet LAN, and power
cord to immediately begin operation.
The IAD receives all of its configuration parameters from the
companion CopperEdge DSL concentrator and is managed by the service
provider using CopperView(TM) network management software. CopperView
enables the service provider to remotely change line speed and manage
services from a central network operations center (NOC) location,
simplifying provisioning and order/billing records.
