Hey Dave, I can build a computer for you! The computer I'm using is one I built this last summer. I don't have a reference but I'll do it free of charge, to support AMD!

<I've heard that GTW is good, but not great. I hear Dell makes faster computers. I want to be partisan and buy an Athlon, but ..>

You mean Dell has offered you a Athlon-based
computer? Faster than GTW? :) :)

<..but I want to make sure I get a good "computer" and not just a good chip.>
That would be the hardest part. You probably need
to search deep the Web and find some outlet
like ComuterGeeks.com or alike an ask them to
built a ASUS K7V VIA-based Athlon computer.
At least you will have less troubles with
memory. Or stay with GTW, it must be most
stable.

<< I've toyed with the idea of building my own, but I don't have the time. What makers optimize Athys to their full potential, with reasonable prices. >>

You can try a screwdriver shop on the web to get a decent price on a highly customizable system. I don't think dell or gateway really make great computers, but they do have great support. If you don't mind doing hardware and software support yourself, I'd go with a screwdriver shop or build my own.

Right now, you'll just get much more pc for your cash going with an athlon, but I'd wait until the thunderbirds come out, they'll have huge performance increases, and it's really not that far away. Prices won't be going anywhere but down as well.

xicomputer.com

(I have no direct experience with them, but their specs look very good)
