Paul Ma, <The big companies do not have a secret talisman to make their computers more stable>
Oh yes they do. They have thermal chambers, they have
validation engineers, they have in-house BIOS
engineers, they have carefully crafted
stress and diagnostics software, they have multi-
gigaherz and multi-$$k analyzers and scopes, they
have collections of every software pieces ever sold,
every OS, game or application, they run these
application 24/7 scripted on batches of machines
they built, they have industry connections,
they have early preproduction samples
to resolve problems in advance, they...

Of course, after all this job is done on
most parts that are given ok into production
and resale, some home-assembled computer may be
as reliable as the industially-built one.
But some manufacturers may want to be first
to the market, and certain level of
"incompatibility" leaks out, so customer
be aware...

Regards,
- Ali

Paul Ma - are you sure you're 17?

I hope you work for AMD someday.

Thanks everyone for your help. I was just kidding. I really own the 1.6 Willamette demoed in the desert. And a Pentium 1Gig. But I can't use DSL because Pac Bell couldn't get the wire inside the meat locker without drilling holes into the locker wall. :)

Paul Re <<The big companies do not have a secret talisman to make their computers more stable, it's a myth.>>

No Paul it is not a myth. Why do you think that it takes them weeks to test out new platforms, new hardware and software. They do extensive TESTING using facilities and personal which an individual does not have.

I grant you that a knowledgeable person (as you seem to be) can do a very good job with name brand components, but not as good of a job of tier one OEM.
