The company also let slip a few details about a forthcoming product, called iCache, which will be bundled next month into its 8i database. Caching is the practice of storing and handling of frequently accessed Web pages to improve a site's performance.

The move by Oracle adds to its e-commerce offerings, but it also adds to its list of ever-growing competitors. Inktomi Inc. (NasdaqNM:INKT - news) and Novell Inc. (NasdaqNM:NOVL - news), among others, are providers of caching technology to Web sites.

Henely also said that the database business, contrary to predictions of its stagnation 18 months ago, continues to be strong, driven largely by the rapid growth of the Internet. ``It feels 180 degrees different today' than it did 18 months ago.

Undergirding much of this, analysts said, is Oracle's newly found focus on marketing and delivering a clear message to the technology industry and to customers.

``Oracle has been laser-tight in its marketing and that just really helps drives sales,' said analyst Bob Austrian of Banc of America Securities.

Scott, I hope this news doesn't come back to haunt us! Adams' has to be working at Internet Caching time to keep NOVL from falling behind. Interesting turnaround in Oracle's marketing focus that analyst's key in on. If NOVL and Adams' have their way, we *should* finally see some progress. Otherwise, Ellison is moving ahead at warp speed, as are McNealy and Chambers. NOVL has to cut some deals soon with CSCO and others to show that they are making "traction" in this space or we'll be gobbled up by the likes of IBM, NT, LU or some other BIG CAP. The honeymoon is over.

GO!! and GO NOVL!!
