Jay, it's the nature of the beast. But in practice, the write time depends on (1) resolution you have selected and (2) amount of buffer. For example, on the Nikon 950, using the next to highest resolution (1 m pixels) allows one to take a burst of photos, without having to wait at all for the write function to be completed. Only when using the uncompressed TIFF format does the write time cause delays. Typically, I find the write time runs around 15-20 seconds in this mode. At first, because I make mostly 8x10 prints, I thought I would be dissatisfied with the 1 meg resolution, but actually it is quite satisfactory.
