Newbridge will Transmit Broadband Digital Television over Telephone Lines at MIP TV 2000 ? 10 to 14 April Newbridge 3dSL solution will be showcased within the 3dSL truck, located outside the main entrance of Le Palais, La Croisette, Cannes Maidenhead, UNITED KINGDOM 3 April 2000 -- Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC) today announced it will be demonstrating its 3dSL solution to the television industry at MIP TV, Cannes, between 10th and 14th April 2000. For the last 26 years, MIP TV has brought together television programme makers, schedulers and buyers from all over the globe to buy, sell and discuss the topical issues within the industry. Within this context it is the world?s premier television event. Pioneered by Newbridge Networks, 3dSL delivers a suite of technologies and services that together enable the delivery of fully interactive broadband entertainment services over ordinary phone lines (also known as ?the local copper loop?). The solution allows telephone companies to expand their service offerings to include digital interactive TV, on-demand movies and high speed Internet access alongside the more traditional telephony services. Within a year, as the local copper loop is ?unbundled? from the telephone networks, new service providers will have the opportunity to offer similar or more innovative services. Brian Keating, eEexecutive vvice ppresident of mmarketing for Newbridge Networks, said: "We believe that the method of delivering digital entertainment and information services is about to change dramatically, and that 3dSL technology can place telephone companies in the vanguard of the interactive TV revolution. 3dSL removes all of the technical hurdles that these operators previously faced in trying to deliver multiple services, including interactive, broadband services, to the residential market." To date, telephone companies have mainly focused on simple ADSL, the main function of which is to deliver high speed Internet access. Newbridge sees the Internet as being a driver of DSL services, but they have created 3dSL with a view to expanding the revenue opportunities for telephone companies still further. With over 900 million telephone lines worldwide, the potential for 3dSL is immense. Kingston Communications, an independent telephone company based in the U.K., is using 3dSL technology from Newbridge Networks to deliver a comprehensive range of entertainment services including on-demand video to its residential customers. Kingston launched the service in Hull in October 1999 and is adding new customers for the service every day. New customers are equipped with a DSL modem, and a digital set-top box. Elmsdale Media is providing Kingston with its Yes TV video-on-demand service, while BskyB, Flextech and the BBC will provide multichannel television. The services include: up to 55 digital broadcast television channels; access to more than 1,000 hours of video-on-demand film entertainment; fast Iinternet access; and a mix of local news, information, and shopping with e-commerce applications. According to Steve Maine, chief executive of the Kingston Group: "3dSL is not just fast Internet access, not just video on demand, not just digital television, but a full suite of services which is deliverable now." Newbridge Networks designs, manufactures, markets and services wide area networking solutions for service providers in more than 100 countries. On February 23, 2000, Newbridge entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by Alcatel, a world leader in end-to-end voice and data communications solutions systems. Alcatel's leadership in broadband access combined with the Newbridge leadership in ATM / MPLS / IP switched routing will make it one of the top players in the next-generation networking market with complete, end-to-end communication solutions. Newbridge current customers include the world's 350 largest telecommunications service providers. The Company employs more than 6,000 people on six continents.
