I don't see why it has to be, and I think this replacement is already taking place. For how long now have people and institutions who have held on to currency (gold or paper) as opposed to assets (stocks, real estate) watched their relative value whittled away. That's always been true of course except for the aperiodic 'adjustment' but money has always been necessary. The need for dollars is disappearing except as a way to keep score.
