Analysts said a sharp loss of almost $1 in oil prices was not the main factor behind Tuesday's decline in oil shares.

"The oil sector has been caught up in the emotion of the overall (stock) market," said oilfield analyst James Wicklund at Dain Rauscher Wessels, who added that 'old economy' stocks, such as oil company shares, may stage a return to investors' portfolios.

"While the technology sector has been trading on hope and expectation the oil sector has near term visibility," Wicklund said.

Indeed, while Wall Street ended lower on Tuesday, the S&P International Oil Index (^SPOILI), which tracks oil majors, rose 0.95 percent.
