Plundering the New Economy

Who says governments aren?t forward looking? US state and federal politicians recently mustered all their brain power to gaze into the future. Like the Wicked Witch of the West spotting sweet but oh so powerful Dorothy in the crystal ball, the politicians recoiled in horror. They watched today?s innocent looking "e-tailers" grow into tomorrow?s monsters.

Surely they will eat away all the precious retail sales tax revenue, they cried. But what to do?

Tax ?em they shrieked, tax ?em!

Drooling Over Dorothy

Childish or not, the Wizard of Oz analogy fits, at least for one more point. Just as the Wicked Witch overestimated Dorothy?s power, so too do politicians overestimate the vigor of Internet commerce. If that bloodthirsty lot cared to read any Internet company?s IPO prospectus they would likely discover among the "risk factors" listed a little note that reads something like "if one (cont)
