Cytogen Corp. (CYTO) is asking its shareholders to approve a proposal to increase the company's common stock available for issuance to 250 million shares from 89.6 million shares, according to a proxy statement filed Thursday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The amount of Cytogen preferred stock would remain the same, at 5.4 million shares.

Cytogen said in the filing that the increase would ensure that shares will be available, if needed, for issuance in connection with stock splits, acquisitions and other corporate purposes.

Shareholders of record as of April 3 will be eligible to vote on the proposal at the company's annual meeting scheduled for May 16.
