Everyone always sites the AT&T breakup as being a good deal for the investors, but given the bull market of the last two decades, I am not convinced that the pieces of AT&T actually performed any better than the overall market.
I can't find any 20 year historical returns for the S&P 500, so I'll quote the 10 historical returns.

AT&T components 19-year annual average return 17.7% 1981-
S&P 500 10-year annual average return 18.8% 1990-
Microsoft 10-year annual average return 49.5% 1990-

As you can see Microsoft stock is currently doing much better than either the S&P 500 or the broken up AT&T.
