OT--funny you should mention West Side Story. I was just looking at the calendar for my nearest book store and they have Arthur Laurents reading from his new memoir Saturday. He either wrote or directed (or both) the play.

Maybe Sigmund's guy was talking about Extreme Sports. Because in terms of team sports it has little to do with guys taking more risks. In the last year I've read some histories of pro football and man, it was amazingly brutal before the equipment got better as did sports medicine, as did the power of player's unions.

I'd say with the rise of soccer and the decline of boxing and football on a participatory level, serious injuries and risk taking per capita are likely down. There will always be a certain segment pushing the edge.

So on the whole, I have serious questions about what the guy was saying.

Of course modern equipment can cause problems too. There's more arm trouble with today's ultralight tennis racquets, from what I've read. But one can balance that with better training and medicine. Yesterday a Cal player returned to the tennis team just 5 weeks or so after having shoulder surgery. I thought he was done for the year.

Nice day for THQ.
