Regardless of the various motivations that people may bring to obeying the law, one cannot know if something is expedient unless one knows what it aims at. Since, at a minimum, the law is aimed at the maintenance of social order, social order becomes an underlying principle by which the expediency of laws may be judged. Thus, it is viewed by those who frame the law, at least, as a good.....
