James Thompson - You are right about my tone. The "lame" remark was uncalled for. I do apologize. As for the rest, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I was fully conscious for the Reagan years and read some of the books written about the period, some of them by insiders. I recall that there was a conscious decision within the Reagan administration to push through the tax cuts, which caught the Democrats naked and surprised, and then force the Democrats to cut spending comensurate with the tax cuts. Of course first on the chopping blocks would be the Democrats' favorite social programs. This was all done under the guise of supply side economics, that the tax cuts would actually increase tax revenues which they didn't. At least not enough. Except the Democrats wouldn't bite. There was not political will to boost taxes again, nor to eliminate programs the Democrats liked. There was plenty of conniving and blame on both sides. Again, I'm sorry for my tone and look forward to rational discussions on the topics in the future.
