"FCC gives conditional OK to Bell Atlantic-GTE merger"

That's the last hurdle... since most preparations for
this are now complete, I expect the merger to be swiftly
consummated... perhaps only a couple weeks from now.

While this may have some small immediate impact on the
share price, I expect the bigger (and more positive)
impact will come as "Verizon Communications" demonstrates
that it is making progress toward gaining approval to
offer long distance services in Bell Atlantic's "home"
territory. So far, such approval has been granted only
in New York State. I understand that there are 12 more
states to go and that the next states targeted for this
include Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.
