Paul,

Do you guys all think that there will be a huge sell off after earnings?

Every AMD earnings report I can remember has been followed by a huge sell off, regardless of how positive or negative the results were.

I'm not going to be holding any options that day, (at least not any calls.)

Paul, it's a crapshoot. It's as easy as this - if you're in it short term, take your profits before earnings. But if you plan on holding at LEAST another three months, hold on. If it goes up, you win. If it goes down, buy more! Had you done this last Q, you would be able to pay Harvard tuition, cash.

One thing I sometimes do is to sell half or a portion of my holdings prior to earnings. But that's still 50/50. AMD is around for at LEAST a couple more quarters, we all know that. Most likely they will be around much longer. The street will realize this soon enough.

Good luck!

Dave

Paul Re: I hear a lot of things about selling right after earning reports.

Paul,
In your situation, I wouldn't sell. Scubria, Niceguy, I and others are riding April options which will expire on April 21st. So we have to do something before then.

In your case, holding out will be the best bet. If you sell, you might get lucky, you might not. We all think that AMD will be trading higher in a few months. After earnings, there might be a selloff, there might not. You could watch AMD trade sideways for a few weeks, but maybe not.

It's not easy to be a daytrader or momentum trader.

There will be another challenge after the earnings - the option expiration day - a week after the earnings.

There are roughly 77,000 call option contracts outstanding. The highest strike is 70. If the stock is above 70, all will be in the money, all the puts will be worthless. The calls will have to be sold. The 77,000 shares represent 7.7 million shares.

paul ma, <Will AMD sell off after earnings?>
If Jerry left nothing under the table AND the stock is over 75, YES, it will.

Jerry said at least 1.06B revenues and 1.2M Spry Athys. If the stock rises above 75 in the next week and we don't get at least 1.07B and 1.3M Spry Athys, I think there will be disappointment. Just my opinion. But even these numbers could be OK if there are significant announcements in the product area or positive forward guidance.
