Jane,

We have about 9-15 more years of parenting ahead of us. Will keep you posted on the progress!!!

What most people fail to understand is that the first few years are the most important.

Some think they can change bad behavior in later years, and they don't even worry about the first few.

As you have witnessed so far, that philosophy is bull**it.

Your's will do fine, just keep up the good work.

Have fun,
Phil

Jane,

My latest story:

As you know, late last year, we traded my wife's Windstar on a '99 F-150 4x4 pick-up, which became my vehicle.

When we did, my wife started driving my Firebird Formula as "her car".

She puts a lot of miles per week on a vehicle because of going back and forth to work and acting as a taxi for the kids.

She had been complaining about gas mileage because of the 5.7 engine.

When my son, now 19, got his driver's license, I bought him a '77 Monte Carlo. I figured it was big enough that if he had an accident, he would at least have some protection. It has a 305 two barrel, and we only live about three miles from his high school, and his part time job was between home and school, so I knew gas mileage was not a problem. Together we repainted the "Monte", installed a new Stereo with CD, an amp with a big Woofer, new dash, new carpet, etc. It was "cool". He was even voted "Senior with the longest car". This cars hood and/or doors are almost as long as a Volkswagon.

Anyway, after he graduated High School, he started college at about 20 miles south of where we live, and changed jobs and now works about 15 miles west of where we live, so some days he travels, after work/school etc. around 100 miles. He complained that he was spending $70 per week in gas.

We began looking for a used vehicle for my son.

I the meantime, I recieved a letter from Ford offering us a $4000 certicate on a new Ford because of the problems with the engine on the Windstar.

Lightbulb flicks on in my little brain.

If I can put my wife in a new Ford, and get my son to take the Firebird, I can solve all problems. Keep my Firebird so I can drive it when I want to, and let my son pay the expenses. The Firebird, with fuel injection would be a lot better on gas than his Monte.

The only problem is, my son was looking at Saturns, four doors, with four cylinder engines. I thought this strange.

The only way you could have gotten me in a four door, four cylinder car when I was 19 was if I was hog tied.

Anyhow, now for the fun part.

I presented the plan to my wife, she loved it. First step accomplished.

Now for my son.

When I presented the plan to him, his mouth dropped open, his eyes got as big as coffee cups, and he gasped, "You mean I can get the Firebird?"

I explained the details and without hesitation he excepted the terms.

Then I asked:

"Why, if you were so intent on getting a four door, four cylinder car, you jumped so rapidly on assuming the expense of the Firebird?"

For once, at least in recent memory, he was speechless.

Have fun,
Phil
