One branch per 5 instructions is about right. I don't think branches are a big issue however. Most designs can execute several basic blocks at a time, and there may in fact be more likelihood of finding a non-dependent instruction on the other side of a branch.

My concern about subtle improvements in architectural performance is that they tend to have a large impact on clock speed. This is a battle that I fight almost every day at work (particularly today!) It is known in the industry as "creeping elegance."
