In a way, you've made my argument for me, Steven, by clarifying that by "appreciation" we mean satisfying our strategic requirements. Of course, this is true, as we now both have said.

But there are apples and oranges bumping up against each other here.

Yes, of course Ike and all Israelis "care" what those who have the power to hurt them by withdrawing support do. (It perhaps went without saying that Ike's message was not that he doesn't care whether aid necessary to their safe-haven's survival is forthcoming.)

Isn't Ike's meta-message simply an emotional rejection, in an ironical and bitter "I couldn't care less how you judge me, you sanctimonious hypocrites" tone, of the world's disapproving attitude toward the fixed determination of the Israelis to create a place of sanctuary against a continuation of the persecution to which they have gotten, over the dark centuries, a bit tired of becoming accustomed?

I think you believe your post was merely a dispassionate recognition of the influence of economics on politics; but I think it was faintly supercilious in tone, and failed to take empathetic account of the cynical attitude a Jew with a memory and children might well have toward those who judge them so harshly and their enemies so imperceptibly.

There is a neo-antisemitism rising in the United States. I believe it to be associated with the rise of PC, though not solely associated with that. In its tone, your post, so breezily dismissive of Ike's bitter litany, reminded me of it, and that's why I was moved to respond.
