Wegener Communications Opens New Production Facility; New State of the Art Facility Will Increase Production Capacity for Wegener

DULUTH, Ga., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Wegener Corporation (Nasdaq: WGNR - news) announced the opening of a new
production facility that will increase its production capacity by four fold. This increase assures the ability to meet current as well as expanded capability for future growth. Located less than five miles from Wegener's corporate headquarters, the new facility will house Wegener's production, materials management, shipping, receiving and customer service departments.

``The investment in our new production and service facility is a big step forward to increase productivity and prepare us for growth,' states Keith N. Smith, president of Wegener Communications. ``The new, improved design of the factory gives us increased production capacity while keeping manufacturing costs virtually the same.'

The new production facility opened for operation on March 27, with only two days being required for the move. The facility is in full force with two ``Just In Time' (JIT) cell based productions lines, each containing four production cells that can operate independently or can be combined to double, triple or quadruple the output of a single cell. Each cell is capable of producing any high volume product. This technique has dramatically increased efficiency and productivity. Products are assembled in a
one-way forward moving direction, which allows for visual monitoring of the complete production process from start to finish.

Just In Time (JIT) production methods require that only the parts necessary for a particular operation are on the production floor at a given time. Materials are moved in Kanban sizes determined from the production schedule. Changeover to a new product is almost immediate with only minutes of switchover time required. The new production lines double capacity with no increase in production costs.

In addition, Wegener has adopted a central ``Signal Center' that incorporates both internally generated and received signals for testing its equipment. Both production and service will share the same signals. All signals at each location are verified as to level which allows both production and service personnel to correlate their testing results. Wegener also purchased additional ``C' band and ``Ku' band antennas for increased signal monitoring.

``We experienced a smooth transition to our new design,' adds Mike McCombs, senior vice president of operations for
Wegener Communications. ``When the service department moves to the new facility in May, we will see improved
communications and sharing of knowledge which will enhance our ability to meet rapidly changing customer requirements. I'm excited about the production opportunities available with our new facility.'
