The situation in the Sierra is quite complex. Lots of drug running which is ruining the traditional Tarahumara way of life. Very hard to tell who is a good guy and who is a bad one as the Army, who is supposed to be chasing drug growers, often is in the biz itself.

The last few years have been very tough for the Tarahumara tribe as they have been afflicted by a severe drought which continues to this day. The traditional Tarahumara is very gentle but will have nothing to do with anything that runs counter to the old ways. Not a whole many of the completely traditional Tarahumaras left. Many accept new ways to some degree. You will no doubt see them at Creel and other places.

Are you taking a trip to the bottom of the canyons? If so, it will be an experience of a lifetime.

Father Verplancken is doing his best to have water wells drilled, which will help with hygiene, nutrition, farming, etc. The drilling, of course, costs money as does running a relatively primitive hospital.
