A powerful force that will always oppose relaxing drug laws is the moral horror thing. There's a lot of calvinist and Puritan still built into our political system. If we only oppose an identified evil long and hard enough - it will go away.

...Some of these people probably think that the Pill (birth control, not morphine sulfate) is the tool of Satan.

Not only is it not working; mandatory sentencing seems to have created some real horror shows in terms of imprisonment.

I don't believe changing the penal system or what is legal or not would alter this fact. When society allows the actions of a lying, rapist to not only go unchecked but to be the model of SUCCESS, tweeking the systems isn't going to do much. The conscience of the typical American needs to be raised in this regard. When personal failure in decent behavior is seen as part of the formula for success in the world nothing is going to change.
