"The player must suppost multiple technologies, so the consumer doesn't have to." Oh. And all players will support all technologies? And they will all update themselves with the appropriate decoders, which will be available simultaneously for all players at the time that somebody starts using a new encoding scheme? I doubt that very much. That would be an extremally confusing scenario for consumers. They are going to try to download music into their players, find out that it just plain "doesn't work" and get frustrated with the whole thing. The industry has to pick a single standard.
