<<I don't buy this.>> You have either lived a very sheltered life or are currently living in denial.

LRR, you write: "Imagine for a moment if tobacco were banned or otherwise punitively restricted."

Only in my worst night terrors! Perish the thought! Besides, where would government find such an able scapegoat and a solid and sustainable source of easy revenue.

You further write: "Worse, those with tobacco-related health problems (plausibly related, not proven of course) might in all likelihood find themselves thrown out of their health plans!"

I've got a news bulletin for you--this has been happening in California for a number of years. At the very least, in many circles, there has been a rationing of health care to California's smoking populace, bordering on mindless negligence (IMO). For some time I have had my own thoughts on why smokers drop like flies in the California health-care system, and it ain't necessarily because of their smoking.

It is one of the reasons I chose to leave California. Of course, the oppressive newest cigarette tax Sacramento rammed down our wallets, contrary to what the voters really voted, played a part in this decision. But that's another soap box for another time.
