Good recovery at the end of your post :-) No, I don't think drugs are evil -- they may be misused in evil ways, but I think it impossible for the actual drug to be evil.

I believe that all of the kinds of drugs you mention cause effects which cause various levels of "awareness" (depending a great deal on the dose and mind-set of the user). Even so, these effects and the actions they may inspire or allow are frequently seen in a much different light the morning after. Sometimes, in my experience, the differences have been rather alarming.

I have known many people who used drugs, used drugs too much, cut down on drugs, quit drugs and now have very productive lives. I have also known many people who's passage ended very badly -- either in death or a kind of living death. I could go on in some detail on the subject but don't think I will.

I will, however, still entertain your description of the "mature, thoughtful ways we can integrate them (drugs) into our life." Give me time to pour myself some Cuervo first, OK.....
