Dell part 2. Advanced Micro Rises on Optimism for Talks With Dell (Update2) By Molly Williams Sunnyvale, California, April 6 (Bloomberg) -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. shares rose 4.8 percent after an analyst said the chipmaker's discussions to sell processors to No. 1 U.S. personal- computer maker Dell Computer Corp. are ``heating up.' Advanced Micro rose 3 1/4 to a record close of 71 1/4 on the New York Stock Exchange. The shares have more than quadrupled in the past year. Dell fell 2 23/64 to 51 9/16. The companies both said they're in discussions. Dell, whose PCs run exclusively on chips from Intel Corp., is the only one of the top 10 PC makers that doesn't use Advanced Micro processors. No. 1 chipmaker Intel has struggled to meet demand for its chips, cutting into sales and profit at some PC makers. Gateway Inc. and others have been turning to Advanced Micro to fill the gap. Jonathan Joseph of Salomon Smith Barney said in a report that Dell and Advanced Micro are in ``serious supply discussions.' Advanced Micro would be a second supplier after Intel, as the chipmaker is in most PC accounts, Joseph said. ``We're still continuing to look at the products,' Dell Vice Chairman Kevin Rollins said. ``We continue to talk.' Advanced Micro needs to persuade Round Rock, Texas-based Dell that it can meet the PC maker's high-volume production demands, Rollins said. ``There's still problems with the availability of the products,' he said. The talks help confirm the strength of Advanced Micro's product line, Joseph said. He now expects Advanced Micro shares to reach 100, up from his earlier forecast of 75. Yesterday, AMD said first-quarter sales topped $1 billion as demand for its processors and flash memory chips soared. Last week, Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro said it will sell about $300 million in flash-memory gear to Alcatel SA
