The message was that we should to do everything we can to lessen the struggle for children. I like that idea. I am not sure that I like that idea, because it seems to me a banner under which a great deal can be done to restrict freedom. All young people must struggle with freedom; they must learn to manage it and control their self-destructive impulses. Not all will survive the struggle. But to deny them the right to that struggle is to deny them the right to grow up.
