Re: "Did Sun announce the shipping of Ultra III's by Sept 2000??? They claim they are on schedule."

You can't be serious. Sun originally claimed UltraSparc III processors would sample by mid 98. We should have seen systems by mid 99.

Re: "If Sun's competitors come out with a better hardware
technology 3-6 months before Sun ships the Ultra III,
I don't think it will make a big difference in
purchasing decisions, unless they don't deliver in
performance what they had promised."

Where have you been sleeping these last 6 months?
IBM (one of Sun's competitors) came out with better silicon technology last Sept with the S80 series. They have now extended that technology throughout the RISC 6000 line. New technology will be incorporated into much faster systems AGAIN by year end before Sun responds with anything. Of course, you probably think all that really matters is the "architecture thingy"

P.S. I hear Sun is desperately looking for quantities of
real fast 8MEG ECC SRAM. I don't think they can ship UltraSparc III systems any time soon without it.
