I will begin by admitting to fear of drugs. And that's not because I haven't "been there, done that." Because I have, actually. 1. Reality is cool -- and pain is part of that. 2. It's too easy for kids to end up in the dumper (most don't). 3. In addition to the hormonal rushes and other changes in the lives of "teens", drugs take it to another level -- not unlike JFK Jr. having too much airplane to handle given his "experience" level. -- sorry if that didn't track smoothly -- I had to go in the other room and turn off the TV. CNBC has stopped spreading investor panic for the evening -- I can take that but, I swear, if I hear one more word about that Cuban kid..... Anyway, I got through it and my kids got through it and I think anyone else who tries it ought to be locked up for their own good. I mean well. That said, I readily acknowledge the relationship between altered states and the ability to DO certain things at a certain level. People who can truly create are probably in an "altered state" to begin with. Different wiring, whatever. Some because of a personal aesthetic and preferred discipline -- serious fasting can bring on some SERIOUS vision! My own experiences and observations cause me to concretely conclude that the normal and near normal among us frequently depend on chemically altered states to function in certain environments. For example -- 1. Rock and roll groups on tour. Believe me, it ain't easy to get as excited as the audience about that ONE SONG night after night. 2. Politicians on the campaign trail. What a mind and body numbing experience that is. Mostly, these people stick with legally prescribed drugs, I think. 3. Combat pilots (combat anythings, really) doing two-a-days or three-a-days, day after day -- and still managing an even number of take-offs and landings. 4. And, yes, writing. 5. Anyone with an imperative to be really "up" or "on" is often in need and at risk. BTW, Steven, stock brokers are one thing -- stock traders are another. Trading is a very "high energy" line of work. This has probably contributed little to the conversation but, as I noted earlier, I'm in a wordy state. Just been told to polish up a six-week itinerary for two nice ladies heading for Europe. My sweetie is a hell of a saleswoman but I'm the brains of the outfit -- WHERE ARE MY MAPS? WHERE ARE MY SCHEDULES? WHERE ARE MY DRUGS? Later - Mike
