chic,

I'm working on writing a few books, and I do a lot of driving. I would love to be able to dictate as I drive.

No offense, but I don't think I want to read your book. How deep can the book be if it was dictated while driving?

I know this doesn't cover many computer users, but this is just another app that requires a big CPU.

I don't know if you want to have a tower based PC on the passenger seat of your car, plug into you car electrical system for this type of work.

More likely, someone will come up with a specialized chip with hardwired voice recognition circuits, pack it into a tiny chip consuming a fraction of a Watt of power, running on 2 AA bateries. And this chip will be built into those small voice recorders.

PS: I hope you will not mention video conferencing. I remember an interview with Andy Grove on the day Intel announced earnings. It was about 3 or 4 years ago. Lou Dobbs asked him what he (and Intel) thought the next big thing would be in the computing that will need all this power that Intel chips were delivering. He said video conferencing. I almost laughed out loud.

Now they say that the fast chips somehow enhance your Internet experience. Now, does Intel think that these commercials will be seen only by clueless morons, or are they serious. If they are serious, I think I should buy some Intel puts.

Joe

There are a number of embedded CPUs with tiny dies and plenty of performance for speech recognition. It is amazing how little additional performance an additional 500% of area can produce.
