John,

There was a long article in Thursday's Boston Globe that might be of interest going forward.

It was on the proposed spin-off of a new Internetworking company from GTE corp.

They plan on highering 500 individuals this year as a part of the proposed spinoff of their high-speed data networking interests. Might be a great combination of a start up company attached to a big organization....

As established today under GTE, it holds most of the assets of the old Bolt Beranek & Newman company that was the pentagons first contractor for the computers that became the Internet.

This unit of GTE corp had revenue of 1 billion but was not profitable. In February it won a contract with America on Line worth $2.5 billion, to install new connections for the service provider.

They need to unload this aspect of GTE's business because of the proposed merger with Bell Atlantic. If approved Genuity would become one of the top 4 providers of the Internet connectivity services.... along with Sprint, WorldCom, and UUNet.
