I totally agree. There is NOTHING new about it. Thank god they took this action, I say. I like the fact that they are taking the losses now. We are vastly lowering expectations, and we are going to see one very lean mean beast from here out.

I'm playing this by buying more HK648, not the parent.

Of course you are right in noting that we all knew about the information behind the headline that indicated that Softbank was showing a year to year drop in profits. I was just pointing out that someone chose to publish a headline as if it was new surprising information. As we all know, Softbank can effectively manage the published profit numbers by selling appreciated stock in some of the investments that are in the Softbank portfolio.

One of the nice things about owning Softbank is the diversification of risk. Softbank can afford to take risks and have some of them not work out. Of course, when you take prudent risks over many investments, some of them will work out spectacularly and more than make up for the ones that don't work out. In this light, Softbank can be viewed as a conservative, relatively safe investment.

Anyway, I hope that people understand that I was republishing that headline about profits being down 91% only to show what sort of information the Japanese public is being fed. The totality of negative press about Softbank in recent weeks has the feel of of a major spin machine effort to lower the Softbank stock price. Perhaps there are a number of players who would benefit from a temporary lower price.
