I saw the ES7000 and I saw the most excellent TPC tests, but I also saw 16 Dell Severs running the entire was it CBSMarketwatch website from the stage. I thought Dell was playing catch up ball in the server department.

ericneu-can you tell me a little bit about what ALL those Dells were running and maybe a little more about what they were supposed to exhibit? Is DataCenter sort of the front end to SQL sever for larger installations?

What I think you're describing are actually three separate demonstrations. I'll try to describe them one by one...

1. The ES7000 demo was showing what's possible with Windows 2000 Datacenter Server. Some of the features unique to the Datacenter edition are:
- Up to 32-way SMP
- Up to 64GB of RAM
- 4-way hardware clustering
- Support for system partitioning
- Process control
- Winsock Direct

One piece of the Datacenter demo that most people remember is how CPUs were added to the application "on-the-fly". That's process control at work.

2. The CBS Marketwatch demo with the 16 Dell servers was a demonstration of a forthcoming product known as AppCenter. AppCenter allows you to manage a farm of servers as a single entity, and handles the dirty work (synchronizing content, etc.) for you. There's a bunch of other stuff as well, but I'm going to stop here because I can't remember what's public and what isn't :).

The goal of AppCenter is to make managing numerous small servers no more difficult than a fewer number of large ones.

3. The TPC-C test results weren't part of any of the live demonstrations you saw on 2/17. Bill discussed them quite a bit (because we're quite proud of them) but it wasn't shown in action. The test was run using Windows 2000 Advanced Server and a beta version of SQL Server 2000 Enterprise.

Let me know if you'd like more detail about any of these, and I'll answer as best I can.
