If one defines social conservatism as a violent resistance to change, than ipso facto any regime already in place that is willing to use coercion to maintain the status quo is "socially conservative" and oppressive. If one defines social conservatism as a loyalty to the traditions under which one was raised, and a reluctance to abandon them without compelling reason, than it is not so much oppressive as prudent........
