Paul,

I was hoping Stitch would shed more light on this milestone and MiTi Labs, but it's the storage conference season and he's probably continent-hopping. All the talk will probably be about the SEG/VRTS LBO, which is curiously timed just after the end of one of the hottest winters in US history and at a very early stage of the disk drive industry's recovery

Gus

P.S. I do remember that vertical (perpendicular) recording was envisioned to neutralize thermal decay and create more headroom in the density race. If I'm not mistaken, portable drives -- totally dominated by IBM and a few Japanese companies -- remain the application most suited for vertical recording because of the practical limitations on speed and size.
