Yeah I saw Lilian's reply. Personally I never took to the game and quit irevocably when my Grandson started beating me.
Funny how people don't recognise the practical implications of that concept. Had a discussion just this week with a guy who couldn't seem to understand that the capacity (and hence cost) of a cylindrical storage tank goes up as the square of the diameter, and not just directly with the diameter.

Actually, the first game of chess can be traced to around 5 A.D. in North-West India - so the grain in the story may well have been wheat. It first spread to Persia. It was called chaturanga from the Sanskrit chatur: four. A chaturanga was an army composed of four elements: elephants, chariots, cavalry, infantry.
