ALL, Friday April 7, 5:39 pm Eastern Time worldlyinvestor.com Stocks to Watch Stocks of the Week: Microsoft, Celera, AMD and More By Travis Yoes, Correspondent Microsoft Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) The software juggernaut fell heavily this week, dragging many tech stocks with it. The company tanked Monday on news that its settlement negotiations with US antitrust lawyers collapsed. Monday's 15 3/8 fall began a tech sell-off that left the Nasdaq with its largest point decline and fifth-greatest percentage decline. The federal judge presiding over the antitrust suit issued his ruling after the bell Monday. He found that the company violated antitrust laws and said he would seek an immediate appeal to the US Supreme Court after determining penalties. The judge said that he wanted to speed up the appeals process because he didn't want the appeal to ``disrupt the economy or waste any more ... time.' The judge also proposed that Microsoft's punishment be determined within 60 days. The announcement also precipitated a remarkable sell-off on Tuesday, though buyers jumped in late and helped the markets recover. Tuesday's trading saw both the Dow and the Nasdaq fall more than 500 points into the red before bouncing back to near their opening values. Microsoft's shares tumbled 17 3/16 this week, to 89 1/16. Celera (NYSE:CRA - news) The biotechnology sector received a much-needed boost this week after President Clinton issued a statement that companies should have the right to patent discoveries from privately financed gene research. President Clinton said he wanted to clarify a previous statement that many investors interpreted as a call for free distribution of gene research. Biotech shares surged after the President's comments, enjoying a two-day rally that repaired much of the damage caused by last month's sell-offs. Celera helped keep the biotech resurgence alive by announcing Thursday the completion of the sequencing phase of its human-gene mapping project. Celera said that the next step for researchers would be to put the sequenced segments in their proper order. Although biotechs succumbed to profit taking on Friday, most companies gained significantly this week. Celera finished the week up 38 1/2 at 130 5/8. Incyte Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq:INCY - news) closed up 12 9/16 for the week, at 100. Millennium Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq:MLNM - news) jumped 43 3/8 to 173 1/4. Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD - news) The chipmaker gained this week after its chief executive said the company expects first-quarter sales to exceed $1 billion. AMD attributed the strong outlook to record sales of flash memory and to achieving its goal of selling more than 1.2 million Athlon processors. AMD will disclose earnings April 12. AMD gained 15 1/8 this week to close at 74 1/8.
