Two answers-- Yes it was a typo. From the Abstract I posted "This study, together with recent demonstrations of exceptional bandwidths (more than 110 gigahertz) and ease of integration (with very large scale integration semiconductor circuitry and ultra-low-loss passive optical circuitry) demonstrates the potential of polymeric materials for next generation telecommunications, information processing, and radio frequency distribution."

Next, solitons and WDM; Collisions between solitons in different channels can occur. The collision length depends on fiber characteristics, bit rate, channel spacing etc.
Collisions cause soliton phase shift and frequency shifts.
At the receiver, collision-induced temporal shifts introduce unacceptable jitter.

OK ??

Here's a backgrounder on electo-optical & its progression towards 'integrated optics' that should assist those 'not embedded' in the field. It helps provides a status reference by which to measure recent claims pertaining to the migration & uses of polymers, ceramics, & Lithium Niobate crystals in the development of active optical functions such as, waveguides, modulators, switches, ect... onto IC's.
