Elmer,

AMD did a motel6 demo in the parking lot of a meter pointing to 1.1MHz. Intel did a demo in front of 1000 industry professionals but it was also a meter pointing to 1.5MHz.

Austin Athlon has very high yields at 1GHz. What speed do you think Dresden parts run at?

In case you haven't noticed, recent AMD announcements have been very conservative, in contrast to the desperate propaganda coming out of Santa Clara.

Elmer,

<i<So does it make sense for Thunderturd to improve but Willamette won't? I don't think so.

I was expecting Willy to outperform, or should I say out-MHz Thunderbird, so if Thunderbird can keep up, it would be a pleasant surprise for me.

But even though Willy may have more potential MHz-wise, it is a new core, and there is more risk in releasing a new core than adding an on-die L2. If Willy slips, Intel may actually get in trouble, because Coppermine will have a tough time competing against Thunderbird.

I don't remember which one, but I think one website reported the 1.1GHz Thunderbird was demoing some game at Comdex. Sorry, no link. You don't have to believe me if you don't want. But don't be surprised when AMD releases a 1.1Ghz Thunderbird mid-year. It's coming, and it runs more than MHz meters.
