Bell Atlantic launches wireless upgrade, new name
Bell Atlantic Corp. announced today that it will take on the new name of Verizon as soon as it completes its planned merger with GTE Corp., which still awaits approval by the FCC.

As a precursor, Bell Atlantic today renamed its wireless unit Verizon Wireless, marking the completion today of the company's merger with Vodafone AirTouch plc of London. The FCC last week approved that merger, which will create a single, $70 billion wireless company serving a potential 232 million customers.

As one of its first orders of business, Verizon Wireless introduced today a new nationwide flat-rate cellular calling plan called SingleRate. However, the company offered no availability or rate information for SingleRate.

When Verizon Wireless combines its wireless networks with those of GTE, in Irving, Texas, later in the second quarter, the combined venture will have 24 million actual customers and reach 98 percent of the U.S. population in 96 of the top 100 cities, said Bell Atlantic officials in New York.

Verizon Wireless also expects in June to start tests of third-generation (3G) wireless voice and data technology, with data de-livery rates on the 3G platform reaching 144K bps, officials said.

One other initiative includes support for General Motors Corp.'s OnStar in-vehicle technology, with Verizon providing personal calling services for the 4 mil-lion vehicles equipped with OnStar.

Verizon also plans to implement Over-the-Air provisioning of service on its code division multiple access (CDMA) network, which offers both wireless voice and cellular digital packet data (CDPD) transmissions. Using CDPD, subscribers will be able to use the Over-the-Air provisioning feature to re-motely activate service or to change their phone numbers or area codes.

When Bell Atlantic completes its merger with GTE Corp., of Irving, Texas, sometime this quarter, it will rename itself Verizon. Once the re-branding effort begins, it will take from one to two years to complete as the merged company places the new name and logo on its buildings, payphones, trucks, bills and elsewhere.

Bell Atlantic also today announced a $3 billion upgrading of its cellular telephone network for mobile voice and data.

The funding will also be used to upgrade GTE's cellular properties when its merger with Bell Atlantic is finalized later this quarter, officials said. The upgrade will in-clude the testing and planned third-quarter launch of two-way short message service (SMS) services for text mes-sages, including confirmation and acknowledgement. The SMS capabilities will be based on equipment from Lucent Technologies Inc. and Nortel Networks Corp., officials said.
