General Motors to build Verizon technology into its cars

RDSL

07 April 2000

Car maker General Motors is aiming to install a dial tone as standard
equipment in the majority of cars it will manufacture in 2000, making GM
the largest customer for mobile phone company Verizon Wireless. Verizon
aims to add 1 million GM subscribers to its customer base by 2001, and
add 4 million by 2003. GM aims to install a cellular phone link
connected to Verizon's network in all cars fitted with the Onstar comms
system. Starting with 2001 models in late-2000, the Onstar system will
offer access to Verizon's network and a cellular phone number, with no
extra subscription charge. Callers pay for used minutes. The cost for a
basic Onstar subscription is US$199 per year. In 2000, Onstar also aims
to launch a service offering personalised information, including e-mail,
derived from the Internet and read via the onboard communications link.

Verizon is a joint venture between Bell Atlantic and Vodafone AirTouch.
