Hyundai Electronics develops very small 256 Mbit DRAM

Apr 06, 2000 --- According to a report in the Korea Times, Hyundai Electronics Industries has developed the world's smallest 256 Mbit synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM) chip for commercial production.

According to company officials, the new generation chip utilizes 0.14 micron design rules. The memory device utilizes just 3.3 volts in power and has a processing speed of 166 MHz, making it the most sophisticated in its class, they said.

The chip has the capacity to store 2,000 pages of newspaper information and it compatible with any of the high-speed microprocessors from Intel.

"The development of the new chip means that costs can be cut drastically since the size of the chip is reduced by about 20 percent and thus also the packaging," a company official said. He added that the new design rule technology is an essential part of commercializing the production process for gigabit memory devices and should accelerate the development of new generation chips.
