Lucent Technologies Announces 3G Collaboration With Radio Design AB of Sweden Prague, Czech Republic, April 12, 2000 - Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) and Radio Design AB of Sweden today announced plans to co-operatively support the introduction of third generation (3G) CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) mobile networks to the Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) 450 Market. Lucent and Radio Design will initially explore ways of migrating existing analogue Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) networks to third generation CDMA 450 networks. The intent is to offer a number of services to operators using the NMT analogue system to ensure a smooth migration to CDMA 450 digital wireless networks. Major areas of co-operation between Lucent Technologies and Radio Design AB include: RF design and field services for both analogue, CDMA 450, and CDMA in other bands; consulting services to assist in devising technical NMT to CDMA 450 digital migration plans; supply of NMT analogue base stations and smart antenna systems in support of analogue to CDMA 450 migration and technical marketing support in presenting the benefits of cdma2000 technology and capabilities to the wireless marketplace. The benefits for operators investing in CDMA 450 include the ability to rollout third generation functionality in the 450 MHz band, providing wide area coverage and advanced services to the consumer, with high-speed data comparable to other digital standards, such as UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephone Service). "CDMA is one of the chosen technology standards for 3G systems. Cdma2000 and W-CDMA systems, along with other 3G standards, will form an important part of the backbone for the future requirements for wireless data that will take the 450 million subscribers of today to a predicted 1,000 million by the year 2004," said David M. Poticny, Vice President Global Wireless Strategy at Lucent Technologies. "Lucent is looking forward to working with Radio Design on driving the development and deployment of CDMA 450." "Lucent is the world wide leader in CDMA mobile networks and we are pleased to be partnering with them to provide the infrastructure, services, and products that will allow the current NMT networks to evolve directly to Third Generation," said P†l Krger, Managing Director Radio Design. The co-operation brings together Lucent's expertise in CDMA technology deployment with Radio Design AB's extensive knowledge of analogue NMT systems and intelligent antenna systems. This combined knowledge is critical in understanding the digital migration issues in transitioning NMT networks from analogue to CDMA 450. Background to CDMA 450 and NMT Two years ago, the operators and vendors of NMT networks formed the Digital Interest Group (DiG) to recommend a digital migration path to the NMT operators. At the conclusion of this investigation the operators voted in favor of CDMA 450 as one of the two preferred digital upgrade technologies. Lucent Technologies is the world leader in CDMA (code division multiple access) mobile networks and intends to produce CDAM 450 network equipment this year to enable operators of analogue networks in the 450 MHz band to become providers of third-generation (3G) mobile services. Over 40 countries utilise the 450 MHz band, including those that have first generation analogue Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) networks, such as those established in the Nordic countries, Eastern Europe, Russia and Asia. NMT networks, which have a narrow spectrum allocation, require a migration path that allows them to use the bandwidth efficiently if they are to cope with the capacity demands of current and next generation voice and data content. Lucent's CDMA 450 offers a uniquely positioned migration path to 3G that provides the most capacity and high speed packet data capability for the available spectrum -- a 2,200% capacity increase over a standard analogue NMT network. Another benefit of Lucent?s CDMA technology is a significant coverage improvement over analogue NMT networks. The CDMA 450 option allows operators to maximize the potential of this bandwidth and to rapidly progress to 3G wireless multi-media services that are competitive in speed and content with other third-generation systems.
