Brick & Mortars Will Lure Buyers Via Wireless LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA U.S.A., 2000 APR 7 (NB) -- By Martin Stone, Newsbytes. Brick-and-mortar businesses will soon be able to reach mobile wireless telephone and Web device users with such information as real-time updates, driving directions and in-store specials, predicts a major wireless systems manufacturer. According to Go2 Systems Inc., wireless technology will be embraced as a universal element for brick-and-mortar business strategies thanks to a US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mandate that all cellular and PCS (personal communications services) operators to be able to locate their subscribers within 125 meters by October, 2001. The company said in an official release today that, with virtually all new mobile phones sold in the US becoming Internet-enabled within the next 18 months, and wireless business-to-consumer revenues expected to reach multi-billion dollar levels, traditional businesses are recognizing the mobile phone user as a highly sophisticated target audience with specific needs. Driven by the FCC's wireless E9-1-1 mandate, location-based technology has become the focus of the wireless world, the company said, and added that consumer applications will likely beat public safety functions to realization, delivering desktop functionality, such as news, stock quotes, movie reviews and addresses to wireless devices. In short, that means merchants can target prospective buyers and zap their wireless device with a pertinent message, including the fastest route to the store from the user's present location. Go2's patented technology is designed specifically for devices with limited keypads, bandwidth, storage and display space, the company said, and claimed its system will open a new market opportunity for businesses seeking a mobile audience and competitive advantage. In addition to the FCC mandate, market dynamics impacting wireless Internet and location-based technology include carrier and manufacturer technology support for the development of Web-enabled mobile phones, and the widespread acceptance of WAP (Wireless Application Protocol), Go2 said. The company also announced it is working with industry partners, such as Sprint PCS and ESRI, to accelerate the availability of wireless location- based technology. Because Go2 is mobile-centric, it provides enormous opportunity for expanded local Web advertising, estimated to increase from $254 million in 1997 to $3.5 billion in 2002, the company said.
