Jim,

Odd isn't it that the major planned uses of DDR are for graphics while the planned uses of RDRAM are for motherboards? Looks like the engineering community thinks has views opposite yours. Does that bother you at all?

Intel made a serious strategic mistake picking DRDRAM. I'm not sure that it is fair to blame it on engineering.

If the cost was lower, graphics cards would use DRDRAM. There have been several graphics designs which require multiple high bandwidth channels, for which DRDRAM would be a good engineering solution.

Network cards (like Sitera) also can enjoy the same advantages from DRDRAM that graphics cards can. This is because they require multiple channels, and are bandwidth limited rather than latency limited.

I wonder why Sony is not using DDR in PS2?

DRDRAM is a good choice for PS2, for the reasons I outlined above. I suspect that Sony is getting a very good price for their DRDRAM, in order to generate publicity and keep the product alive.

Hi jim kelley; The engineering community doesn't think RDRAM is a good idea for motherboards. It is being designed out even as we speak.

DDR is getting put into narrower and narrower organizations, with x4s now available. That can indicate pretty much only one thing, interest in the motherboard and main memory markets.

By the way, as far as memory for low end machines go, the ones with low granularity and cost requirements, that window of opportunity is now shut from Rambus. The designs you see being announced now were started before all this became obvious, and the companies got locked into early decisions. That these decisions are now going the other way is clear from the analysis of various memory company's product lines that I have posted and will post in the future.

As far as granularity goes, take a look at this guy:

Single chip x64 in a 108-pin BGA, one chip makes an entire 32MB DIMM module. Say goodbye to RDRAM advantage in granularity, it is history:
Single chip, wide bit solution, 14mm x 22mm
Operating current, Max: 220mA (3.3V)

Not only are the days of design wins in motherboards over, Rambus has also lost its niche in the low granularity market (as in graphics and game consoles). Equipment will continue to be produced that uses RDRAM, but the design window is closed, and RDRAM is quite dead. The above part could be used with the Nvidia chip set SDR version, and it would reduce the memory chip count from 4 down to 2. When the DDR version comes out, you can be sure that Nvidia will pick it up.
