Taiwan Semicon upbeat on profit growth

TAIPEI, April 9 (Reuters) - The head of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (TSMC) <2330.TW> said on Sunday he was upbeat about the future of the made-to-order wafer foundry business and expected TSMC's sales and profits to double this year compared with 1999.

TSMC chairman Morris Chang said he was confident his company would be able to produce more than 3.4 million 8-inch equivalent wafers this year to meet sizzling demand.

The company's net profit was T$24.56 billion in 1999. Sales were worth T$73.131 billion last year.

TSMC has decided to build more new wafer fabrication plants in future to meet growing demand, Chang told reporters.

On Saturday, TSMC share price ended unchanged at T$200 on the Taiwan Stock Exchange.
