NEW YORK, April 9 (Reuters) - One-third of Americans
surveyed support the antitrust decision against Microsoft
Corp., with 54 percent saying last week's federal court ruling
would affect them personally, a poll said on Sunday.
The Newsweek poll of 752 adults contacted April 6 and 7
found that 34 percent of the respondents disagreed with the
ruling by U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson, while 34
percent agreed with it and 32 percent had no opinion.
As investors in and users of technology, 21 percent of the
respondents believed the decision would have a major impact on
them personally, while 33 percent expected a minor impact.
Thirty-six percent said the ruling would have no impact on
their lives.
Jackson found last Monday that Microsoft <MSFT.O> used its
monopoly power in personal computer operating systems to
illegally intimidate other firms and preserve that monopoly.
Microsoft plans to appeal.
The Redmond, Washington-based high-tech giant could face
penalties up to and including the breakup of the company, but
53 percent of the survey respondents said court sanctions
should stop short of a Microsoft breakup.
The survey had a margin of error of plus or minus four
percentage points.
